One of the host countries, Mexico, is playing the opening match of the World Cup 2026 on June 12 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City against South Africa.
Canada is in Group B and will play Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12 at BMO Field in Toronto. It will play the final two group stage games against Qatar and Switzerland.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Format

Under the new format, the 48 qualified nations will be divided into 12 groups of four teams. Each team will play three group-stage matches, with the top two teams from every group automatically advancing to the knockout stage. They will be joined by the eight best third-placed teams, creating a 32-team knockout round for the first time in World Cup history.

FIFA has also introduced a new knockout pathway system designed to keep the highest-ranked teams apart until the later stages of the tournament. If favorites such as Spain, Argentina, France, and England win their groups, they will not face each other before the semifinals.

Teams tied on points will be separated by goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head record, fair play points, and finally, a drawing of lots if needed.

The traditional draw rules remain in place, meaning teams from the same confederation cannot be placed in the same group, except for European nations.

With more teams, more matches, and more opportunities for emerging football nations, the 2026 FIFA World Cup promises to deliver the most competitive and globally diverse tournament in football history.

Ronaldo Tops Forbes Highest-Paid Athlete for Fourth Consecutive Year.

Cristiano Ronaldo, a 40-year-old, has once again declared himself the world’s highest-paid athlete, marking his fourth consecutive year. This is his sixth time in the past 11 years that he has topped Forbes’ annual earnings list, with a $300 million haul.

His total earnings for the past year are estimated at $275 million, which includes $230 million from his salary and bonuses at Saudi club Al-Nassr and an additional $50 million from endorsements and sponsorships. This achievement highlights Ronaldo’s enduring global appeal and financial dominance in the sports industry.

The Portuguese soccer superstar is a force of nature in business and entertainment, as well as on the football pitch. His massive revenue comes from football salaries, endorsement deals, sponsorships, business enterprises, and social media influence. Ronaldo is one of the biggest names in sports and is growing into fashion, fitness, hotels, and lifestyle initiatives to help keep him among the world’s richest athletes.

His recent shift to the Saudi Pro League has increased his earning power with record contracts and commercial opportunities, Forbes says, reflecting the growing financial power of the elite athlete in the modern sports industry. Another athlete who was second in place was also a Saudi-aligned boxer, Canelo Alvarez from Mexico, with $170 Million.

Though Lionel Messi, a 38-year-old from Argentina, has more Ballon d’Or victories than Ronaldo, he is rounding out the top three on the list with $140 million. This living legend plies his trade for Miami FC and hopes to lead Argentina as World Cup Champion in 2026.

The Top Highest Paid Athlete in the World 2026

Cristiano Ronaldo, Soccer, Portugal: $300 million

Canelo Alvarez, Boxing, Mexico: $170 million

Lionel Messi, Soccer, Argentina: $140 million

LeBron James, Basketball, U.S.A.: $137.8 million

Shohei Ohtani, Baseball, Japan: $127.6 million

Stephen Curry, Basketball, U.S.A.: $124.7 million

Jon Rahm, Golf, Spain: $107 million

Karim Benzema, Soccer, France: $104 million

Kevin Durant, Basketball, U.S.A.: $103.8 million

Lewis Hamilton, Formula 1, U.K.: $100 million

Ronaldo is one of the oldest athletes on this list; he’s still going strong and will likely top it again in 2027 for a fifth consecutive year. But we’re pretty sure he traded a lot of this wealth to hoist the World Cup trophy this summer. Many admire Ronaldo’s consistency, longevity, and global impact on the sport. Cristiano Ronaldo’s continued reign on Forbes’ list is a reminder not only of his success.
