Mexico’s teenage sensation Gilberto Mora made history during the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, becoming the youngest player in the tournament and the youngest Mexican ever to appear at a World Cup.
The 17-year-old midfielder came on in the 65th minute of Mexico’s 2-0 victory over South Africa at Estadio Azteca. At 17 years and 240 days old, Mora broke a Mexican record that had stood since 1930.
The Club Tijuana youngster is also the sixth-youngest player to make a World Cup debut, joining an elite list that includes Brazilian legend Pelé.
